On the Balkan Concept and Derivatives Historical Process

Abstract

Öz: Asya’dan Avrupa’ya geçiş yolları üzerinde bulunan Balkanlar ilk çağlardan itibaren coğrafi ve kültürel bir kavşak konumundadır. Farklı din, dil ve kültürden insanların yaşadığı yarımada bu yönüyle tarihî değişim ve dönüşüm dönemlerine tanıklık etmiştir. Jeopolitik konumu çoğu zaman bölgeyi kaotik bir duruma sokmuş, yüzyıllar boyunca çatışmaların odağında bulunmuştur. Bu durum bölgeye ve burada yaşayan halka yönelik farklı algıların oluşmasında etkili olmuştur. Bu çalışmada doğu ile batı arasında yer alan ve geçmişte olduğu gibi bugün de dünyanın önemli merkezlerinden biri konumunda olan Balkan coğrafyası, bu coğrafya için kullanılan adlar, Batılıların bölgeye bakışı ve Balkan algısı hakkında bilgi verilmeye çalışılacaktır.

Abstract: The Balkans, which are located on the roads from Asia to Europe, are a geographical and cultural junction since the early ages. The peninsula, from this aspect, where people from different religions, languages and cultures live, has witnessed the periods of historical change and transformation. Its geopolitical position has often placed the region in a chaotic state and has been at the center of the conflict for centuries. This situation has been effective on forming different perceptions towards the region and the people living there. In this study, it is aimed to give information about Balkan geography which is located between east and west and one of the most important centers of the world today like in the past. Moreover, this study also includes names which are used for this geography, Western countries' outlook on this area and information about Balkans perception.
