Evaluations on the Ethnic Identities of the Ottoman Woman by Travelers

Abstract

Yabancı veya yerel yazarlar tarafından yazılmış olan seyahatnameler, yazıldıkları dönem ve konu edindikleri coğrafyalar itibariyle okuyucularına pek çok konuda bilgi sunarlar. Bu makalede 16. ve 17. yüzyıllarda farklı görevlerle Osmanlı Devletine gelmiş, Joseph Tournefort, Michael Heberer, Nicolas De Nicolay, Reinhold Lubenau, Stephan Gerlach, Jean Thevenot, Philippe du Fresne Canaye ve Salomon Schweigger adlı yazarlara ait seyahatnamelerdeki farklı etnik kimliklere ait Osmanlı kadınları söz konusu edilmiştir. Seyyahlar; kadınlara ait giyim-kuşam, takı, fizikî özellik ve gelenekler çerçevesindeki birçok uygulamayı eserlerinde tasvir etmişlerdir. Çalışmamızda, adı geçen seyyahların eserlerinde ayrıntılı anlatılan Bulgar, Ermeni, Gürcü, Karaman, Macar, Mağribi, Ragosa, Rum ve Sırp kadınlarının özellikleri incelenmiştir. Konuya uygun olarak Enderunlu Fâzıl'ın Zenânnâme adlı eserinden de seçilen örnek beyitler makalede yer almıştır.

The travel books, which were written by foreign or local authors, present information on many subjects to readers as of the period in which they were written and the geographies treated. In this article we will research the Ottoman women of different ethnic identities mentioned in the travel books written by Joseph Tournefort, Michael Heberer von Bretten, Nicolas de Nicolay, Reinhold Lubenau, Stephan Gerlach, Jean de Thévenot, Philippe du Fresne Canaye and Salomon Schweigger, who came to the Ottoman State with different reason in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. The travelers portrayed in their works the clothes and finery, jewelry and physical attributes of the women as well as many implementations within the framework of traditions. The characteristics of the Bulgarian, Armenian, Georgian, Karaman, Hungarian, Maghrebi, Ragusan, Greek and Serbian women who were described in detail in the works of the aforementioned travelers ared researched carefully in our study. Sample verses suitable to the topic were also selected from the work titled Zenânnâme by Enderunlu Fâzıl and included in the article.
