Where Is the Name of the Island “Istankoy” Coming From?

Abstract

Öz: Âdeta Anadolu’nun bir parçasıymış gibi görünen ve Ege Denizi’nin ince bir hat oluşturarak Anadolu’dan ayırdığı onlarca adadan biri de “İstanköy” adasıdır. Strateji açısından ve doğal olarak politik açıdan İstanköy, Doğu Ege’deki önemli geçit noktalarından biri üzerinde bulunması nedeniyle tarih boyunca muhtelif mücadelelere sahne olmuş, çeşitli milletlerin idaresi altında kalmıştır. Ada, 1523’ten 1912’ye kadar Türk hâkimiyetinde kalmıştır. Bugün Yunanistan’a bağlı olan İstanköy, Adalar denizi (L’Archipel) Ege’nin On İki Ada (=Dodekanisos) kesiminde Rodos ile birlikte Türk varlığının nüfus ve kültür açısından devam ettiği bir adadır. Bu çalışmada, etimolojik bir metotla, Türklerce Ada’ya verilen isim olan “İstanköy”ün nereden geldiği hususunda Türk dili araştırmaları açısından kısa bir inceleme sunulacaktır.

Abstract: Istankoy (Kos) is one of the islands in the Aegean Sea which looks as if it were part of Anatolia, despite actually separated from the sea with a thin line that the Aegean Sea draws. The Island of Istankoy is situated in a strategically thus politically significant point of passage in the eastern Aegean Region. the Island became the scene of various struggles, and was ruled by many different nations in the past. Istankoy was ruled by Turks between the years 1523 and 1912. The Island, being under the jurisdiction of Greece today is an island with Rhodes where Turkish population and culture remarkably exist now in the Twelve Islands Region (=Dodekanisos) of the Archipelago (L’Archipel). In this paper, a short analysis by an etymological method from the perspective Turkish language studies is presented on the name “Istankoy” given by Turks to the island.
