An Overview About the Actors in the Design and Construction of Ottoman Factory Buildings

Abstract

Öz: Endüstri Devrimi’nin ardından yaşanan sanayileşme ve makineli üretime sahip büyük ölçekli fabrikaların inşası, diğer Batı dışı toplumlarda olduğu gibi Osmanlı’da da devletin modernleşme politikasının bir bileşeni olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Batıdan ithal edilmiş bir yapı tipi olan fabrika yapılarına ait endüstriyel bilginin hangi kanallardan Osmanlı topraklarına girdiği, nasıl ve kimler tarafından projelendirilip inşa edildiği makale kapsamında ele alınan konulardır. Çalışma büyük oranda Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivi’nde bulunan özgün belgelere dayanmaktadır.

Abstract: Industrialization and construction of large-scale factories with machine-aided production emerges as a component of state modernization policies in non-western societies in the 19th century. The Ottoman transition from crafts to factory system seems to have been followed the same path. Therefore, the scope of this article concentrates on the channels of the industrial know-how, especially the know-how of constructing an industrial building. Depending on the original archival documents the article aims to make an overview about the actors in the design and construction of Ottoman factory buildings.
